Diaz successful in welterweight debut
The preliminary fights on Spike TV didn’t disappoint as Stockton’s own Nate Diaz made his welterweight debut against hard-hitting Rory Markham. Size was a disadvantage for Diaz as Markham weighed in seven pounds over the 170-pound limit, though it had no affect on the outcome of the fight. Nate and older brother Nick may not be the biggest in their weight class, but they are scrappers and that’s exactly the attitude that Diaz brought into the Octagon. From the sound of the bell in the opening round, Diaz completely overwhelmed Markham and made the best of his five-inch reach advantage. Diaz utilized a mixture of combinations of punches and kicks to keep Markham backing up. After a knee that dropped Markham, Diaz used his superior grappling and jiu-jitsu skills to control him on the ground and finished with some ground and pound. This was the best Nate Diaz we’ve seen in the Octagon, and welterweight seems to be the perfect weight for him.
