Georges St. Pierre – Doing Work

Many MMA fans like to hate on George St. Pierre and say he is a boring Lay and Pray fighter who doesn’t finish his opponents. What I took from the fight on Saturday night was a champion who gives his best effort while sticking to his corners game plan, and trying to finish the fight for 25 minutes. After all submission wins usually come about when one fighter makes a mistake, GSP was trying to make it happen even when it wasn’t there to take. His stats for this fight were nearly perfect, let me break it down.

George St. Pierre shot for 11 takedowns and landed all 11 takedowns. He had 11 half guard passes, 8 passes to side control, 2 mounts, and took Hardy’s back twice. Stats like that just don’t normally happen and his takedowns landed percentage is growing. GSP had a few different submission attempts; a shoulder lock, an arm bar, and an ankle lock in his 6 submission attempted. How is that for not wanting to finish the fight? Now in the stand-up GSP landed 2 of 6 power shots, while hardy landed zero, he went 3 of 6 with his Jab while hardy landed nothing unblocked. GSP landed 5 of 5 leg kicks, Hardy landed only one. GSP landed 90 out of the 109 shots to the head while Hardy was on the ground and 74 out of 74 to the body which is a nice display of Ground and Pound mixed with submissions. GSP out struck the striker in Hardy 174 to 42, so much for Hardy having the striking advantage.

Georges St. Pierre was unimpressed with his performance though and was seen working BJJ in his locker room after the fight making sure he gets the submission right the next time. GSP is a humble champion that’s hard to bet against, he is still improving and impressive. He is always in the top 3 P4P and rightfully deserves it. I look forward to watching his next MMA fight, I am sure he will win that fight everywhere as well.
