Oakland could be in turmoil during UFC 117
Within the next 30 minutes a court decision could put things into motion that possibly would affect the area surrounding UFC 117. Right now in Oakland, California people are waiting for the verdict of BART police Johannes Mehserle is set to come in around 4pm pacific time.
On New Year’s day 2009 22 year old Oscar Grant was shot in the back and killed by Mehserle during an altercation. Police in the Oakland area are bracing for a verdict that could possible result in a massive riot, a riot that could last for weeks.
UFC 117 is August 7th in the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. Though it’s still over 4 weeks away the repercussions of this trial will be felt at UFC 117, should the so called wrong verdict be read today.
Such issues could make fighters coming early to train, dangerous and or too much to worry about while focusing on the fight. There is also the greater issue of rioting still happening, making holding the event in Oakland dangerous. Should rioting happen and continue until the UFC 117 activities began, this will put fans and fighters in danger.
Bottom line here is the UFC might have some seriously tough decisions ahead when the verdict is read today.
[Update] The Verdict has come in and it the lowest charge of “involuntary manslaughter” which holds a sentence of time served – 4 years. There might be an additional gun charge but that might not be known until the sentence hearing on August 6th, the day before the PPV.
