He said, she said: Josh Koscheck and Yves Lavigne

josh koscheck 300x277 He said, she said: Josh Koscheck and Yves LavigneEarly Friday morning, September 3, it was reported that veteran referee Yves Lavigne gave an interview to Journal de Montreal regarding the upcoming GSP/Koscheck fight scheduled for UFC 124. Yves is quoted as saying “in (Koscheck’s) last fight, he was afraid of getting hit and was content on keeping his opponent (Paul Daley) pinned to the ground.” If you remember the events leading up that fight, both men talked of knocking the other man out. However, once the fight started, Koscheck abandoned that idea and implemented a game plan that worked more to his strength: wrestling.

The interview goes on with Yves predicting that Koscheck “would be no match for St. Pierre” and that it would end the same way as their previous fight; with GSP walking out victorious. At one point, Yves says he is surprised that Koscheck would even want to return to the Bell Centre after his previous comments following his victory over Daley.

Upon hearing about these statements, Josh Koscheck released his own statement on his website. “UFC referee, Yves Lavigne is clearly not suited to be a referee after his rant of personal attacks and opinions on me as a fighter. It’s supposed to be his job to look at a fight unbiased, but how can anyone trust this guy to fairly referee any fight ever again after his comments?”. To Koscheck’s credit, he maintained his composure in his statement and kept it remotely professional.

Once the reports of both men’s statements started branching out, David Simon of www.ringsidereport.net did some digging around and contacted Yves Lavigne via email and had this to report: “Yves Lavigne has provided RingsideReport.NET with an exclusive statement via e-mail regarding the supposed interview: 1.  I NEVER gave an interview to that journalist, 2. I NEVER gave an interview regarding GSP vs Koscheck, 3. My lawyer is taking care of this matter.”

Josh Koscheck got wind of Lavigne denying the interview and blasted him going back on his words only because UFC Officials had contacted him already.

A classic case of “he said, she said” that could potentially ruin the credibility, and possibly the careers, of one or more parties involved. With so many different sides to this story, how can we be sure of who is telling the truth and who is just trying to save face? Whether or not the Yves Lavigne interview is true, one thing is for sure: Josh Koscheck doesn’t want him to be involved in anymore of his fights and encourages other fighters to watch out as well.
