Ricco Rodriguez (44-11 MMA) needs some credit if the UFC wants to push Cain Velasquez as their first possible Mexican Champion. Back in 2002 at UFC 39, Rodriguez of Mexican and Puerto Rican Decent went on to finish one of the best UFC fighters of all time, Randy Couture with strikes in the 5th round of their heavyweight championship fight.
He has fought in pretty much every major MMA promotion and while unknown to many new MMA fans, he is a legend in the sport. He has fought some of the best fighters we know today as legends and has always been exciting. He also finished Arlovski, Monson, and Buentello in their primes.
Ricco is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and currently weighs 218 pounds but has been all the way up close to 300+ pounds for fights. He has fought professionally 55 times, and even dabbled in pro boxing. He is an exciting fighter and still has fights left in him that are scheduled for later this year.
Cain Velasquez is a great Mixed Martial Artist, but if he wins come Sunday he will actually be the second Mexican UFC Heavyweight Champion.

I agree that it should be mentioned. My wife is Mexican and of course her take is that its just as meaningful to have a full blooded countryman who wears his heritage all over him as champ for the first time. But she also agreed that the deserves the respect of at least being mentioned. Thanks for pointing that out.
