Veteran MMA fighter, Pat Healy (25-17) last fought five months ago in June at Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Werdum. His opponent was former Strikeforce lightweight champion Josh Thomson (18-3, 1NC) as part of the night’s main card.

Though he came up short in his fight with Thomson, he showed he could hang with the big dogs. That shouldn’t surprise though, Healy has defeated the likes of Paul Daley, Carlos Condit, and Dan Hardy

Waiting to fight again, Pat Healy talked with MMA Valor about training at other camps, Strikeforce and his career.

I understand you train with Team Quest out of Portland Oregon. How is it Training with Matt Linland, and Chael Sonnen?

I love training at Team Quest, there is a great atmosphere there that is all about hard work. It’s great training with Linland and Chael, they both are very hard workers and lead by example. They set the tone and everybody else rises to their level.

A few months ago, Ed Herman left Team Quest, and had some words for TQ, How do u feel about that?

I think if you know Ed, you can’t be surprised with his comments. If Ed is unhappy he is not afraid to say so. I don’t think we are having any real problems at Team Quest but Ed was unhappy, so he did what is best for him. He is off and running on his own gym now and I’m sure it will do great and I look forward to training with him periodically in the future.

In October you were over in Las Vegas training with Xtreme Couture, and Martin Kampmann, How was that? What did you take away from training over there?

It was great training with Kampmann, anytime you can get a chance to train with new training partners at such a high level you are bound to improve. He has a lot of great coaches around him also, Vegas just has so much to offer, training wise. It was also good to see how a lot of the top fighters around train.

Assuming you watched the Kampmann/Shields fight, what’s your thought on the outcome, do you think martin should have stood up more instead of trying to wrestle the wrestler?

Shields has an amazing way of making great fighters look bad. He is so good of slowing you down and making you play his game and I think he was able to trap Kampmann into that.
You just spent a month Hawaii and ended up training with Bj Penn, Was that planned or where you going there for vacation, and it just happened to work out?

BJ’s crew contacted Linland after hearing some good things about me from a mutual friend who works for Strikeforce. A week later I flew down there and helped BJ train for about a month for his fight with Hughes. It was an amazing trip and I hope to get back there soon for more training.

Let’s talk about you and your career now:

Are you still under Contract with Strikeforce, if so any word on your next fight?

I’m still under contract with Strikeforce, I have one more fight on the contract currently. They haven’t confirmed a date for me yet but I’m hoping for January, but frankly I’m ready to fight now.

You came into your last fight against Josh Thompson an underdog, but yet it was a really close fight until the end, what did you learn from that fight?

I learned a lot from the fight, but the thing I took away from it most was that you have to fight to finish the fight every second. I think in the 3rd round I started thinking that all I had to do was hold him down and ride out the decision. That’s what eventually led to me getting caught; I was focused too much on just trying to keep him down and not using movement to stay one move ahead.

Looking over your record you are 25-17-0 you have been into this sport for a long time, what is one of your most memorable moments?

I have a lot of great memories and experiences from fighting. Training in Waikiki with BJ is probably one of my best experiences at this point. The one that really stands out in my head though will always be the Carlos Condit fight. Not a lot of people gave me a chance to win that fight at the time, and it was one of the hardest, most satisfying fights I ever was involved in.

What got you into the MMA scene?

Growing up I had a friend who lived in the neighborhood who did muay thai and he was looking for someone to spar with. My brother and I where the only ones stupid enough to volunteer, but it was enough to make us fall in love with fighting. I was about 14 then and MMA is all I have ever wanted to do since.

When you’re in training camp, explain your typical day of training, and what do you eat, and on cheat days what do u cheat with?

When I’m training for a fight a typical day usually consists of two workouts. The first one is usually a sparring workout using 16oz boxing gloves or 7oz MMA training gloves. When you spar with big gloves you focus on stand-up and when you have the little gloves on you focus on the ground and clinch. The next workout is either a technique workout on the ground or standing, or a conditioning workout. They usually alternate days so you body can recover. My diet before a fight is high in protein and really low in carbs. I also keep the calories around 2,000 a day so I’m consistently losing weight.

Looking at your history, you have fought a lot of big named fighters, such as Dan hardy, Carlos Conduct, Paul Daley, Chris Leben, Rory Markham. Do you expect to fight any of those guys again, and avenge some of your losses?

I have fought a lot of top guys around right now and I have beaten a lot of them. I would love to fight anyone who has beaten me in the past or who I have beaten, I don’t really discriminate I will fight anyone they put in front of me.

Whats the chance of us seeing you in the UFC?

As far as fighting in the UFC that is up to them.

You have a little brother names Ryan Healy, is he just as force to reckon with as you are? When you guys spar, does the big brother still take it to him?

My brother is my twin and is very tough but I still definitely keep him in check when we spar. That’s just something I have to do as the older brother even if I am only older by a minute.

Thank you for your time, Is there any sponsors you want to give a shout out to, or anyone you would like to Thank?

Thanks for taking the time to do the interview with me. I would like to thank maxgxlmma.com and last round nutrition for their support.
