Joe Lauzon vs. Curt Warburton to Battle in the Steel City
According to Joe Lauzon (19-6), he will be fighting on June 26th in Pittsburg. Lauzon stated via his website, joelauzon.com, that he received a call from UFC matchmaker Joe Silva this past Saturday inquiring on his status. After a brief discussion, Silva informed the Massachusetts native that he would be squaring off against Curt Warburton (7-2) at UFC on Versus 4. However, there has been no mention of the fight on the UFC website.
Lauzon will look to bounce back after being submitted by up and coming lightweight George Sotiropoulos at UFC 123 this past November. Lauzon who is usually one of the more well-conditioned fighters in the UFC, may have been a bit over eager in his bout against Sotiropoulos and appeared to have tired himself out early which allowed for the Aussie grappling ace to submit the TUF alum via kimura in the second round. The loss sent Lauzon’s record to 6-3 in the UFC and 1-2 for 2010.
England’s Curt Warburton will be making his third trip into the Octagon when he arrives in Pennsylvania. Warburton most recently faced Maciej Jewtuszko at UFC 127 where he captured a decision victory. The Wolfslair product is 1-1 in the UFC and is looking to place himself on the UFC’s radar. A win over UFC star and fan favorite Lauzon will definitely send Warburton up the ladder in the UFC’s lightweight division.
On paper, this matchup appears to favor Lauzon. Warburton is a relative novice who started his pro career in 2007. Additionally, most of Warburton victories have come via TKO, having only submitted one opponent in his career. Lauzon will be looking to get the fight to ground and submit Warburton, while Warburton will try to stand and bang. This bout will be a battle of styles. Look for whichever fighter is able to impose their will on the other to win with ease.
