Tim Kennedy defeats Robbie Lawler, Now sits in good position for Title Shot
Many times you can look at the fighters standing alongside the referee, waiting to hear the judge’s scores cards and pick the winner based off visible damage. Occasionally though you’ll get what we saw last night as a cut up and bloodied Tim Kennedy came away with the unanimous decision victory over Robbie Lawler at Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Henderson.
“It’s just Blood,” Proclaimed Kennedy to the judges following the final bell.
Not that the ring side judges needed any persuading, Kennedy had controlled the fight by sticking to Lawler the entire 15 minutes like bubblegum on a shoe. Lawler bloodied Kennedy with a glancing uppercut in round two that had the Army Green Beret painting the canvas red, but it that didn’t deter him from securing the takedown and winning the fight.
“I’m glad the judges see that this is just blood. I get cut, it just happens, so get over it,” Kennedy told Gus Johnson after the win.
Kennedy now finds himself as the most logical opponent to take on the winner of the middleweight title fight between current champion Renaldo “Jacare” Souza and Luke Rockhold, happening on September 10th. Less than a year ago Kennedy and Souza fought at Strikeforce: Houston for the vacant middleweight title. Their bout went the full five rounds with Souza winning a close unanimous decision to become the new middleweight champion.
The win was Kennedy’s second in a row, improving his overall record to 14-3 and 5-1 under the Strikeforce banner. He now reluctantly sits back and waits for the opportunity to once again for the Strikeforce middleweight title.

Tim’s one of the toughest, honorable guys in MMA. It’s frustrating that he’s now essentially back to where he was pre-Souza, but fingers crossed he gets another title fight and takes it.
@Garrett I think that they will give him a title shot against the winner of Souza vs. Rockhold.
