Emanuel Newton wants the world to know he’s Serious!
The date December 5th, 2008 will always be one that Emanuel Newton remembers for both a good and bad reason. Headlining the Maximum Fighting Championship 19 card in Enoch, Alberta Canada, Newton captured the MFC light heavyweight champion while extending his winning streak to an impressive nine in a row. It would also be the beginning of a rough year for the hardcore kid.
Six months later Newton defended his title for the first time against Trevor Prangley, losing his title by unanimous decision. After losing two more times in 2009, Newton was a rock bottom and knew it was time for a major overhaul. Besides a change in training camps and training partners, Newton also addressed his mindset is now “serious about my career now,” he said, “I also Just had a daughter , and that motivates me more than ever to push myself to get the job done.”
Things appear to be working as the former champion has since won three in a row and will be looking to make it four at Friday’s Shark Fights 18. That a quick turnaround for Newton since he’s coming of a win in July and when asked he explained “I need to get some more wins under my belt and let the world know that I am serious about my career now. I am looking to move up to the next level and the way to do that is winning fights.”
Standing in front of Newton (15-6) will be Ricky Shivers (10-5-1) who will also enter the cage riding a three fight winning streak. Fighting mostly in his home State of Alaska, Shiver’s enters the co-main event as a relatively unknown to MMA fans, but not Newton.
“He is a BJJ guy, very tall; looking at his record he doesn’t KO people, if he finishes people it’s by Sub. He is from Alaska and they do mostly submissions. He moved to Vegas so I am sure his stand up has improved. I train with the best guys in the world at reign MMA so I am prepared wherever the fight goes,” described Newton.
Shivers will be a stern test for the new and improved Emanuel Newton as he looks to continue his winning ways. To take that next step towards getting back to the top, Newton must show that he has grown as a fighter and his game has evolved over the last year.
