We now know who will headline the first ever UFC of FOX show on November 12th from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. The one hour special event will feature the UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez defending his title for the first time against the number one contender Junior Dos Santos.
The fight was announced today during a special conference call with the UFC president Dana White and two Fox executives. “This heavyweight match up is going to be a great fight,” said White while addressing the media.
The event was originally announced on the UFC on Fox partnership was formally announced last month. The November 12th show will not be your typical UFC event and will be a showcase or a sneak peek to what the UFC on Fox will be in 2012. The televised portion on FOX will only last one hour and will only air the five round championship fight between Velasquez vs. Dos Santos live. The rest of the time will be used to educate the new fans potentially watching MMA for the first time.
The two heavyweights were rumored to be fighting the following weekend at UFC 139 in San Jose. Neither fighter minded the opportunity to fight on the first UFC on FOX event instead of the PPV. “Both fighters were very excited to be on the first FOX card…… They know how big this it,” said White.
Now with a fight in hand, FOX will begin to market this event hard across all their networks. Tickets for the event will go on sale next week (Sep. 16th) at the Honda Center box office. The full card will not just be the one fight, from a fans point of view White says it will be like any other live event.
Except this live event will be given the Oscar-esque red carpet treatment that will surely bring out the Hollywood stars. I can just see it now….. Ryan Seacrest interviewing Chuck Liddell on the red carpet, asking him “who are you wearing?”
