UFC 135 packed the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado for a 10 bout fight card that was headlined by a light heavyweight title fight between Jon Jones and Quinton “rampage” Jackson. Returning to the home of first two UFC events, the 135th (184th overall) event saw a broken jaw, a sleepy zombie, a Hall of Famer potentially fight for the last time and a champion has his “special day” ruined again.
Jon Jones looked impressive again in his first title defense, going the deepest he’s gone into a fight against Jackson. At times he was toying with the veteran but at no point was the champ ever in any danger. Once the fight hit the “championship” rounds, fun and games time was over and Jones quickly submitted the former champion. Jackson was very humble in defeat while the champ seemed to have his feeling hurt that the UFC brought his next opponent, Rashad Evans into the cage.
Late replacement, Josh Koscheck turned the lights out on the former welterweight champion Matt Hughes with just one second left in the round. Hughes announced after the fight that he won’t retire but instead will ask the UFC to put him on the shelf. Koscheck was uncharacteristically humble in the win, thanking Hughes for taking the fight.
In a preliminary bout on SpikeTV, Anthony Ferguson made his lightweight debut and first appearance since winner the 13th season of the Ultimate Fighter. Ferguson looked crisp with his boxing and a left uppercut to the jaw of his opponent Aaron Riley would re-brake the veterans jaw, ultimately ending the fight between rounds.
