| October 8, 2011 | Reply

Live from the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, UFC 136 brings 11 Mixed Martial Arts bouts with two title fights headlining this stacked card. Starting off on Facebook.com then moving over the Spike TV before ending the night out on Pay Per View.

Preliminary card (Facebook.com):

185 lbs.: Mike Massenzio defeated Steve Cantwell by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)

  • Big opening round from Cantwell had Massenzio in real trouble. Cantwell had his nose broke in round two and wasn’t the same the rest of the fight. Massenzio got stronger as the fight went on and captured the unanimous decision.

185 lbs.: Aaron Simpson defeated  Eric Schafer by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

  • Aaron Simpson clearly had the striking advantage against Schafer and only used his wrestling to keep the fight standing. Schafer had NO answer for the right hand of Simpson and his face was the proof of that. Schafer can take a punch though becuase the fight went the distance despite being hit with several bombs from Simpson.

145 lbs.: Darren Elkins defeated Zhang Tie Quan by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-26, 30-27)

  • The step up in competition was too much for Zhang Tie Quan as Darren Elkins controlled this fight, minus the four failed guillotine attempts from Quan. Elkins showed the superior grappling skills, always advancing to a better position while Quan defended multiple submission attempts.

265 lbs.: Stipe Miocic defeated Joey Beltran by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 30-27, 29-28)

  • Back and forth, toe to toe for 15 minutes to close out the Facebook portion of the prelim card. It isn’t a Joey Beltran fight unless its a brawl and both fighters are gassed out at the end. Stipe Miocic landed the harder shots and secured a couple takedowns as well on his way to his first UFC win.

Preliminary card (Spike TV):

155 lbs.: Anthony Pettis defeated Jeremy Stephens by Split Decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

  • Stephens got two takedowns in the opening round but Pettis upped the ante in round two with three takedowns and ground and pound. They trade takedowns in the final round with Stephen even briefly getting a takedown with just seconds on the clock. A very close fight that came down to the judges and a split decision.

185 lbs.: Demian Maia defeated Jorge Santiago by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

  • Pretty much a one-sided fight for Demian Maia who took down Jorge Santiago a couple times each round. Not a ton of damage  from either fighter but Santiago had no answer for the takedowns of Maia and that cost him the fight.

The prelims resulted in six decisions and as we move onto the main card will the trend continue or can we get a finish?

Main Card (PPV):

155 lbs.: Joe Lauzon defeated Melvin Guillard by 1st rd. Submission (Rear Naked Choke)

  • Guillard comes out lightning fast but a left jab from Lauzon stuns Guillard and puts him on the canvas. Lauzon jumps in and locks in the hocks and next thing you know Guillard is tapping out.

145 lbs.: Nam Phan defeated Leonard Garcia by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

  • Nam Phan come out on a mission taking round one with great combinations to the head and body. Leonard Garcia comes out more aggressive in round two but is throwing everything wild, missing over half of them. Phan continues with the combinations, picking the wild Garcia apart again. Garcia rocks Phan in the final round and the fight is so close to being finished but Phan clinches and recovers to get a late takedown. The final minute of the fight was back and forth with so much action, BUT the fight goes to the judges once again.

185 lbs.: Chael Sonnen defeated Brian Stann by 2nd rd. Submission (Arm Triangle)

  • Chael Sonnen gets right in the face on Brian Stann, eventually getting a takedown, advancing, loocking for a submission and controlling the opening round. Again in round two Sonnen comes right into the face of Stann and gets a takedown, quickly advancing to full mount. A bad stand up allows Stann to land a good shot of Sonnen but its short lived as Sonnen gets a slam right into side control. From that position Sonnen locks in an arm triangle and Stann can do nothing but tap out.
  • Following the fight Sonnen calls out Anderson Silva for a fight during the super bowl weekend to a pro wrestling sytle loser goes home match. Sonnen wins, Silva leaves the division but should Silva win again, Sonnen will leave the UFC.

145 lbs.: Jose Aldo defeated Kenny Florian by Unanimous Decision (49-46, 49-46, 49-46)

  • Florian used the clinch very well in the first round, briefly taking down the champ and ending the round with Aldo’s back against the cage. Aldo made some adjustments in the second round opening things up, including cracking the inside leg kicks. Round three Aldo turned it up and stunned Florian and secured the takedown that results in a mount. Florian used the clinch well in round four, backing the champ up against the cage for a good majority of the round. Aldo takes the fight down in the final round and doesn’t let Florain get a late takedown, which he tried all night.

155 lbs.: Frankie Edgar defeated Gray Maynard by 4th rd. TKO

  • Round one looked almost exactly like their last bout. Gray Maynard rocked Frankie Edgar  multiple times, busting up the champs nose in the process. Much slower round for Maynard in round two allowing Edgar to recover without having to expend too much energy. Round three looked pretty much the same as round two and we seem to be heading for a draw again at this rate. Maynard’s lack of pressure since the opening round bits him in the ass in round four when Edgar lands a right uppercut that drops the challenger. Maynard backs up and Egdar lands another right that sends Maynard face first into the canvas, FIGHT OVER!
