The preliminary bouts for the UFC always seem to provide MMA fans with some true gems, and spectacles for the eye, and the fans that witnessed early bouts that aired on FX for the UFC 143: Diaz vs. Condit event got to see one of the wickedest first round submission victories in recent memory. The featherweight match-up of Dustin Poirier vs. Max Holloway started almost as frantically, and quickly, as it ended.

The competitors that fight in the UFC featherweight division are already known for producing high energy bouts, with usually sudden conclusions as the result. As Poirier and Holloway scrambled for position on the mat, Poirier was able to achieve full mount, thus providing him the opening needed to apply a nasty top position triangle/armbar technique that saw Holloway tapping in mere seconds following the pressure that Dustin applied.

The impressive submission earned Poirier the Submission of the Night bonus, earning him $65,000.

It was a marvelous display of technique and tenacity on behalf of Dustin Poirier, who will most definitely be thrown into the mix of new competitors striving for a shot at current UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo’s title.
