Ryan Couture Earns Marquee Win at Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey

The crowd at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio and the fans watching on Showtime were treated to a coming out party of sorts for Ryan Couture.  Ryan, the son of legendary MMA star, Randy Couture, was able to successfully take a big step up in competition at Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey, as he fought a very tough opponent, in Conor Heun.

Many MMA experts didn’t think Couture had what it takes; this early in his career to take it to the Eddie Bravo trained Heun.  However, Couture was able to showcase a vastly improved standup game as well as the solid, controlling, ground game that his father possessed.

After opening up a cut under Heun’s left eye in the 1st round, Couture continued to pepper him with shot after shot. This set up the ground game, where he was able to take the fight and earn his first TKO victory, a victory that improved Ryan’s pro record to 4-1.

“I’m very happy with the win. Conor is the first guy I’ve fought who has had a name going into the fight and a win over him is a big step for me. This was the best camp I’ve ever had. We knew his strengths and weaknesses coming into the fight and I knew I could go out there and exploit them. I felt him fading a bit after those scrambles so I tried to pick my spots and use openings to reverse him. Luckily I was able to put him in a bad position so I threw everything I had left into that flurry. I’m glad to be the first person to finish Conor and I’m eager to get back in the cage as soon as possible,” Said Couture after the fight.

Time will tell what is next for Couture, but a win like this helps move him out of his father’s shadow and starts to bring into shape, his own career.
