Weekend MMA Primer 10-26-2012
There may not be a UFC on this weekend, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t any MMA action to be had. With promotions running across the globe, here’s a quick peek at some of the main event excitement you can catch to complete your weekend.
MFC 35: Explosive Encounters
Joseph “Leonidus” Henle vs. Elvis “The King” Mutapcic:
In a bid to fill their vacant Middleweight title, MFC has brought together two tough-as-nails fighters to carry the company torch. Henle came to the MMA masses attention during his time on TUF 12, where an armbar against Constantinos Philippou got him into the TUF house. While Seth Baczynski would take him out of the tournament in the quarterfinal, Henle used this mainstream momentum to launch his career outside the octagon and remains undefeated at 8-0.
Mutapcic is a Bosnian transplant that took to MMA like a duck to water and is one of the few truly exciting prospects outside of the two major organizations. Having crushed the competition with his natural power and sharp striking, Mutapcic will be a handful for the dangerous Henle. With Leonidas grinding style of grappling and Mutapcic’s grace in the striking realm, this is anyone’s game and one of the better bouts for this weekend.
Cage Warriors 49:
Cathal Pendred vs. Bruno Carvalho:
With UK MMA continuing to heat up, Irish slugger Cathal Pendred will carry the battle standard into this main event bout, taking on Brazilian BJJ fighter Bruno Carvalho. Pendred has been breaking down the best the UK has to offer in the Welterweight division in his career. A highly physical and athletic fighter, Pendred sets a pace that few can match, using his unorthodox boxing and non-stop clinch and top control as he works opponents over for the win. Having run through UFC vet David Bielkheden with ease in his last fight, Pendred is set to make a push towards some gold, and will need to dispatch multiple time champion Carvalho to do so.
Carvalho is a Brazilian transplant living and teaching in Sweden and facing all comers across the Euro MMA landscape. Using a stiff muay thai game mixed with judo and BJJ, Carvalho has put together impressive wins across the board, most notably destroying Kyacy Uscola’s shoulder with a kimura in the Superior Challenge organization. While he’s under contract with several promoters across Europe and Asia, Carvalho will attempt to gain a foothold in Cage Warriors by putting away Pendred.
Also this weekend in MMA will be Bellator 78 which features the semifinal round of the welterweight tournament.
