Following the cancellation of back to back events there hasn’t been much good news to talk about from Strikeforce. Today though finally there was some news as the promised “stacked” card to open 2013 is beginning to take shape and thus far it is stacked indeed.
The Strikeforce card will take place on Saturday January 12th from the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City. If you remember, that Oklahoma City was the location where the cancelled November 3rd card was scheduled to take place at.
“We’ve built an absolutely stacked card for Oklahoma City and the Showtime viewers,” said Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker. Stacking the card will be three (yes I said three) title fights along with the winner of the heavyweight grand prix.
Lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez (21-2) will take on challenger Pat Healy (26-16) most likely in the night’s main event. The two were supposed to fight back in September before Melendez got injured which led to the event being cancelled. Melendez has won seven in a row with six consecutive title defenses.
Making his third title defense will be middleweight champion Luke Rockhold (10-1) taking on Lorenz Larkin (13-0). These two were set to fight before Rockhold got injured and Strikeforce decided to cancel event number two. Also on the card will be newly (several months ago) crowned welterweight champion and former UFC fighter Nate Marquardt (32-10) making his first title defense against Tarec Saffiedine (13-3).
The fourth announced bout on the Strikeforce stacked card will see heavyweight Daniel Cormier (10-0) step into the cage for the first time since winning the heavyweight grand prix. He was supposed to face a former UFC heavyweight champion in November but in January he will stand across from Dion Staring (29-7).
With just four bouts thus far announced and the rumors of this being the promotions final event, expect the stacked January Strikeforce card to get even more stacked in the coming days.
