Weekend MMA Primer: TPF 15 & LFC 15

Weekend MMA Primer: TPF 15 & LFC 15We’ve got Bellator 81 and UFC 154 on tap for this weekend, but that’s not all the MMA action to be had as this edition of the weekend MMA primer will explain.  There’s always a few fledgling promotions putting on an event in some corner of the world, so we give the little guys some love this weekend and check out a few of these intense matches.

Tachi Palace Fighting 15 (11/15/12):

Anthony Ruiz vs. Angel DeAnda: A classic match with an old lion fighting a young lion headlines TPF 15, as grizzled veteran Anthony Ruiz faces up and coming slugger Angel DeAnda in a LHW title bout. Ruiz has fought around the world over the last decade in nearly every promotion under the sun, bringing a well-rounded skill set and a metric ton of guts into the ring or cage. Ruiz experience is his greatest asset and you can always expect an honest bout out of the AKA fighter. With age and ring time piling up though, this may be Ruiz last chance to snag a title and place himself into the big show before calling it a career.

DeAnda is an up and comer known for his intense striking style and tremendous power.  Moving like a lightweight in a 205lbers frame, DeAnda has rarely fought outside the first round in his career, having starched several men in the first minute of the fight. With his first step up in competition against James Irvin having ended poorly, DeAnda will try his hand at a title here and see what he’s truly made of.  It’s anyone’s guess if Ruiz can handle the younger fighters speed or if DeAnda can outfox someone with so much ring time, but it’ll be fun to see this battle unfold.

Carson Beebe vs. Rolando Velasco: TUF competitor and the brother of former WEC champ Chase Beebe, Carson Beebe will take another step forward in his career, facing veteran fighter Rolando Velasco. Beebe is cut from a similar cloth as his brother, using collegiate wrestling and submission skills to grind away at opponents; breaking them down as their endurance falters.

Velasco is a tough-as-nails fighter who’s fought a great deal of talent in his long career. Holding an impressive win over grappling wizard Darren Uyenoyama, Velasco’s sprawl and brawl tactics and vicious hooking style on the mat make him a tough draw for anyone. With Beebe working his way up the ladder in MMA and Velasco delighting in shutting down opponents, this has potential to be a wild bout.

Legacy Fighting Championships 15 (11/16/12):

Angel Huerta vs. Saul Elizondo: Two of the most dangerous men in Texas MMA clash, as karateka Angel Huerta takes on submission grappling expert Saul Elizondo. Mexican-American karate fighter Angel Huerta got into the game late, but has shown an incredible knack for violence in the cage. Using a style similar to TUF competitor Justin Lawrence, Huerta is all movement and offense with leaping side kicks and lunging punches. While his ground game is something he’s hastily tried to add to his skill set, his multi-limb KO power makes opponents thing twice about closing distance.

Saul Elizondo will need to bridge that gap though to make this fight his own. A no-gi expert competitor, Elizondo has torn up the grappling mats, but rarely steps into the cage. When he does though, his fluid movement on the mat and ability to snatch subs from any angle make him a less than favorable opponent to roll with. This is a fight that couldn’t possibly see the bell as neither man can survive long in others world, so don’t blink when these two hop into the LFC cage.

Besides the events mentioned above in the weekend MMA primer, Bellator 81 will take place on Friday and then Saturday will be UFC 154.
