Saturday’s UFC on FOX 5 will be the fourth event this year on FOX and only the second time the network televised event will be headlined by a title fight. The first ever FOX card was headlined by the heavyweight title fight between Cain Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos but only featured one televised bout. UFC on FOX 5 will have the traditional four bouts on FOX is headlined by the lightweight champion Benson Henderson making his second title defense against Ultimate Fighter winner Nate Diaz.
Prior to the main card on FOX, the UFC on FOX 5 preliminary card will begin with one bout streaming of Facebook before the remaining six bouts air live on FX.
After the first couple of fight cards on Fox the UFC has settled on putting together fights that on paper appear very exciting. The main card is a perfect example of this matchmaking style as each look exciting and should not disappoint. The lead in of back to back welterweight clashes should get the crowd primed and ready for the two headliners.
In the UFC on FOX 5 co-main event will be two light heavyweights looking to position themselves at the top of the division. Former champion Mauricio Rua faces the streaking Swedish fighter Alexander Gustafsson that could put the winner in a number one contenders match in 2013. The 205 pound title is currently on hold as the champion Jon Jones recovers from injury, tapes the latest season of The Ultimate Fighter and eventually fights Chael Sonnen in April of 2013. With that said though it’s likely the winner would move on the face the winner of Dan Henderson vs. Lyoto Machida to determine the next opponent should the champion defeat Sonnen.
After successfully defending his belt in the rematch with former champion Frankie Edgar, Benson Henderson draws Nate Diaz in his first true title defense. This fight has 25 minutes of action written all over it and a finish by either would be a pleasant surprise. Both win the majority of their fights via submission but in contrast are very difficult to be submitted. Expect a ground fight but both fighters have the striking to excite should they decide to keep it on the feet.
With only four events left to predict, the UFC on FOX 5 begins the stretch run with 11 fights to pick. After going 8-4 with my UFC 154 predictions, the overall record is now at 181-128 (58.6%). With a strong final month it possibility of reaching 60% is not out of the questions.
