What We Learned From the WEC

In just 53 events many true MMA fans have held a huge chunk of their heart for the exciting fight promotion known as World Extreme Cage fighting. Simply put: “it’s not the size of dog in the fight it’s the size of fight in the dog” and that quote can’t be quoted for any other MMA production as a whole until now. From just 135 pounds to Lightweights at 155 no other MMA productions fighters have matched the pace and fight aptitude as WEC’s elite crew of mixed martial artist. Fans are both winning and losing from the merge but what matters the most is the fighters will get the money and spotlight they deserve and more super fights will be available.

This past week, we saw the WEC era come to an end. As bittersweet as it was, many extraordinary fights took place as the event ran its course. Jamie Varner: Will He Stay or Will He Go??

For Jamie Varner, 2010 is a year that he should try to forget. The former WEC Lightweight Champion went 0-3-1 for the year and had very little success in the cage in 2010. On Thursday evening, Varner suffered another loss, pushing his record to 16-5-1 with two no contests.  This recent trend of losses has caused quite a stir and now many are speculating if the onetime WEC belt holder would be handed his walking papers by Zuffa.

The WEC 53 Undercard Steals the Show

December 16, 2010 marked the last event for the WEC. The entire card was stacked from top to bottom with exciting matchups to end the promotion with the best fights possible.

Not only did the show live up to the hype, it was the undercard that really shined. Despite the great performances by Dominick Cruz and Anthony Pettis, who both walked out of the cage as the last men to hold their respective belts, it isn’t often that the bottom half of the card puts on the kind of show as seen in Glendale last night.

What better way to end the WEC then with one of the most amazing kicks the MMA world has ever seen. Some how Ben Henderson wasn’t out cold and survived the round but ultimately lost the fight and his belt.
