Torres fought Urijah Fabar training partner at Team Alpha Male Joseph Benavidez (12-1) in the night co-main event. If you didn’t watch the fight you miss one of the worst cuts I’ve seen and the bloody mess that was Miguel Torres. Benavidez struck Torres with a sharp elbow that opened up a grand canyon size cut on Torres forehead. The flood gates were immediately opened and Torres was submitted with a Guillotine in round two. Torres today twitted a picture of him getting the looked at post fight by a Doctor with a message “So I won’t be a model”.

This unpredictability is what makes the WEC so fun to watch and super entertaining ever time out, but is it a good thing?

Last night the WEC put on another great show and what seems to be a regular occurrence a title changed hands. Unlike their cousins the UFC, who’s champs are currently dominating their respective divisions the WEC champs change frequently. This unpredictability is what makes the WEC so fun to watch and super entertaining ever time out, but is it a good thing? Does this revolving door of Champions hurt the WEC more then it actually helps them? The face of the organization has been Urijah Faber since he won the Featherweight Title back at WEC 19 in 2006. Faber is also the only WEC champ in its history to have more then 3 successful title defences. Even though Faber lost the belt at WEC 36 he has remained the face of the organization partly due to this revolving door.

The UFC absorbed the Welterweight, Middleweight and Light Heavyweight classes of the WEC in February of 2009. Since that happen the WEC has put on 9 shows and the titles of their 3 weight classes were on the line 8 times. The champ was only successful in defending their title 3 times, so the title changed hands 5 times or 62.5% of the time. To take that one step further the WEC since its beginning has held 64 title fights with 34 different champs leaving the cage or 53% of the time a new champ is crowned. Compare this to the UFC who has held 99 title fights with only 40 different champs holding the belt, that’s only a 40% turnover.

With that kind of turnaround in their champs the WEC keeps things very competitive and that is what sets them apart from the others. Lookout though as the three weight classes all have recently crowned new champs. These champs will look to defend their titles and defy the odds.

I think I say that for ever WEC card but its the truth the card is a good card with a title fight and a couple former champs too. If you aren’t lucky enough to watch the fights live they can be seen on Versus starting at 6pm PT. The main event will feature the WEC Bantamweight Champion Brian Bowles against Dominick Cruz. The co-main event will see former Bantamweight champ Miguel Torres take on Joseph Benavidez in what could be a #1 contenders match. The card will feature 11 fights, here are my predictions & please feel free to leave yours in the comments.

Main Event:
Brian Bowles over Dominick Cruz

According to Five ounces of pain Professional Boxer James Toney and the UFC have agreed on a multi-fight contract. The 41 year old Toney was seen at UFC 108 stalking Dana White in hopes of negotiating terms to enter the UFC. Toney finally caught up with White at the post fight press conference telling White he wanted to prove what was better Boxing or MMA. I sure this sparked White’s interest as he has on many occasion that MMA is better the Boxing and even called out Floyd Mayweather.

After watching the video between White and Toney with Ariel Helwani I think the “who’s better Boxer or MMA” is the only angle that doesn’t make this signing a freak show. Put to does this you after to pick the correct opponents in there with Toney. Put him in there against a well rounded fighter that could stand some with Toney but also could take the fight to the ground. If we as fans are going to watch Toney inside the cage we want to know there is a good possibility the fight hits the mat. Lets see how he does with that and go from there, just because he signed a Multi-fight deal doesn’t mean he can’t be one and done in the UFC.

Several fights were confirmed yet not officially announced by Strikeforce today, including three title fights for their April 17thevent on CBS.

Several fights were confirmed yet not officially announced by Strikeforce today, including three title fights for their April 17thevent on CBS. Originally thought to be headlined by Feder Emelianenko, that idea was nixed by M-1 over the weekend. Fedor is now scheduled to fight on the promotions card in May which will likely also be on CBS, his opponent will be Fabrico Werdum.

The long rumored Middleweight title fight between current Strikeforce champ Jake Shields and the former Pride Middleweight champ/UFC veteran Dan Henderson was confirmed by Shields today. This will be Shields first title defence since winning the vacant Middleweight title over Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller in November of last year. Shields is currently riding a 13 fight win streak but this could possibly the toughest fight in his professional MMA career. Henderson will look to make a big splash in his Strikeforce debut by winning a title, something he was unable to do while in the UFC. The fight will serve as the nights main event but the night will be full of main events.

Another fight talked about for a while was the Light Heavyweight showdown between current champ Gegard Mousasi and raising star ’King’ Mo Lawal was finally confirmed by MMA Weekly today. Considering the trash talking had been going since Lawal beat Mike Whitehead in December and both fighters wanted the fight it seemed only a matter of when rather then if. This fight holds some mysterywith it as both fighters are highly touted but relatively new to the US MMA scene. Lawal only has 6 professional fights under his belt and Mousasi (28-2-1) will be a big step up in his level on competition. Mousasi is currently riding an impressive 15 fight winning streak dating all the way back to 2006 when he was fighting in Pride. Since coming to Strikeforce Mousasi had beaten Renato “Babalu” Sobral for the Light Heavyweight title and Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou.

The last title fight confirmed came out of left field and to me is the most anticipatedfight of the night by far. Since Strikeforce began co-promoting with dream the talk of Gilbert Melendez fighting the Dream Lightweight champ Shinya Aoki has been swirling. There is no need for swirling talk anymore as we are going to get to see the fight happen in just over a month. Aoki (23-4) is the Dream Lightweight champ and a submission expect who is known for wearing his colorful grappling pants. Aoki has never fought in the US and has only fought inside a cage one other time as Japan usually uses the boxing style roped ring. One of the original poster boys for Strikeforce, Melendez is a former WEC champ and two time Strikeforce Lightweight champ. After defeating Josh Thomson to reclaim the belt Melendez had talked about wanting to fight Aoki over a possible third fight with Thomson. Both Josh Gross and Sherdog has confirmed the fight which will be under Strikeforce rule thus only Melendez’s belt will be on the line. There supposedly is a if needed proposal that calls for a rematch of the bout to take place in Dream’s ring under their varied regulations at a later date. Would be pretty for either fighter to hold both belts at the same time.

Hard to imagine a night with three title fights being on free tv but here it is. This should be a massive night for MMA fans and more importantly to CBS and Strikeforce massive ratings. I have the date cirled on the calander and cleared the day as this will be one awesome night of fights.

Current Strikeforce fight card [April 17th, 2010]

[185lbs.] Jake Shields vs Dan Henderson (Strikeforce Middleweight Title Fight)

[205lbs.] Gegard Mousasi vs ‘King’ Mo Lawal (Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Title Fight)

[155lbs.] Gilbert Melendez vs. Shinya Aoki (Strikeforce Lightweight Title Fight)

I really like these Round 5 figures yet haven’t seen one in person yet. What do you guys think of the Round 5 figures and also what do you think of the 6 being released in Series 2? The Michael Bisping one makes me laugh as it doesn’t look like him at all and the figure as this smirk. Might have to go out and get me a few of these when they are released in April….

While I don’t think the Manumission Fightceuticals Starter Kit will be able to help you with the first two I do think it can help you with the third. As we guys all know, even though we may be paying attention to other body parts, girls have noses. Those noses can pick up foul stenches a mile away and pretty much kill any shot of you getting any. That being said, it’s important to take care of your body and be smelling as best as you can for all those ladies out there. I have heard good things about these products and with it being 40% off in the clearance bin now is a great time to try out a starter kit. So pick one up and use it after a fresh victory, your lady fans will be very appreciative.

Hayabusa Mizuchi Fight Shorts

Per Manufacture-

•Designed with Mechanical PolyDirectionalTM stretch fabric.

•Innovative tie system with indestructible webbing for a distinct customized fit.

•Pro Performance stretch panel and split side seams for unrestricted range of motion.

•Contains Hayabusa’s exclusive GuardlockTM inner grip waistband system.

•Reinforced T3 stitching for ultimate strength and durability.

•Extraordinary High-IQTM odor inhibiting effects.

•Fiber-fused printing technology for lasting style

First Impression- When I first pulled these shorts out of the plastic bag that they came in I could tell that they were going to be a great pair of shorts. The material felt a little heavier then other shorts I have used but seemed to be very durable. All the logos and graphics looked great.

Front - Back

Construction- These shorts are very well constructed. There were only a couple loose threads but everything was either double or triple stitched where it needed to be. These shorts are made out of polyester here is the break down. 90% Mechanical Polyester 10% Performance Polyester. These shorts are manufactured in Taiwan.

Fit- These shorts have an excellent fit. They have a an elastic waistband that works well and and allows them to be very adjustable. They have a very unique closure system. It is hard to describe so I have taken plenty of pictures. The Velcro part is fairly standard but the drawstring part is not like any other pair of shorts out there. It goes through and eyelet of one side of the shorts and then pulls them tight with the other side of the drawstring. Either way keeps the shorts very snug around my waist, and if that wasn’t enough they have a rubber strip going around the inside of the waistband which keeps the shorts from shifting around your waist. Keep in mind that these shorts are a little longer then most shorts falling right at mid to bottom of the knee. They do have a split seam which is also a little longer and have a stretch panel in the inside of the legs.

Closed - Open

Stand up- These shorts work great for the stand up. I had no problems with any sort of technique and they felt very comfortable. My only issue is that they did feel a little heavy but seem like they are going to be very durable. The stretch panel and split seam allowed plenty of range of motion and they did not shift around my waist due to the guardlock waist band system.

Ground- On the ground this pair of shorts does a good job. I did not have any problems with preforming any sort of technique. They did not shift around my waist at all. They only issue that I did have with them is that when I had someone in my guard I found that the legs of these shorts would bunch up. Not a big deal but still something to mention. Otherwise these shorts felt great.

Front - Back

Pros-

Great Fit

Closure System

Quality of Logos

Cons-

Material Feels a Little Heavy

Bunch Up When On Ground

Overall- These are an excellent pair of shorts. With a great closure system and unrestricted movement I can definitely recommend these shorts. You can pick them up at http://www.hayabusafightwear.com/ for around $70.
