The calendar has turned to April which means MMA fans survived the month-long absence of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Despite some great action from Bellator to fill the void, the action of March did little to the April ranks.

Gilbert Melendez Will defend his Title on May 19th

The biggest name left on the Strikeforce roster, Gilbert Melendez will defend his lightweight championship on May 19th but who will stand across from him is anyone’s guess. The event is supposed to take place HP Pavilion in San Jose, California and will also feature the Heavyweight Grand Prix Finale between Josh Barnett and Daniel Cormier.

Last month’s rankings saw little movement within the ranks but that was more than made up for this by all the movement this month. The March MMA fighter rankings saw two new fighters crowned #1, two fighters move up into the #2 spot and a total of 16 changes overall.

It’s been 15 months since anyone has seen Josh Thomson in a cage.  The oft injured fighter was back on the main card at Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey to face off with the former EliteXC Lightweight Champion, KJ Noons, in a fight that may have title implications for the future.

With the Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez running short of opponents; two possible contenders have verbally agreed to fight at the Strikeforce event sometime in March. Former champions Josh Thomson (18-4) and K.J. Noons (11-4) will face off and the winner quite possibly could position themselves next in line for Melendez.
