It’s time once again, to bring the MMA Eight Ball down from the shelf and ask it something pertaining to the sport we all know and love. A lot has been made of the eye poke that blinded GSP for the better part of half the fight. Did it help him survive?
People cry and complain about GSP not finishing, but could you finish a top five fighter if you were blind in one eye? No, you couldn’t. So, I’ll ask the Eight Ball if that poke played a part in the inability of Georges St Pierre to finish.
Following Saturdays MMA versus boxing freak show between Randy Couture and James Toney, Couture was asked what was next for him. Coming off his quick submission victory over Toney, Couture responded by pointing to Dana Whiter and saying “it’s up to him”.
Last night’s UFC 118 fight between Randy Couture and James Toney went as most MMA fans expected, with Randy making short order of Toney. Couture secured a quick victory over Toney at 3:19 in the first round via submission by an arm triangle.
Many fans were looking forward to the fight and were heavily discussing strategies, advantages and drawbacks of the fighters as well as possible outcomes as it was an interesting match up between an MMA legend and a major boxing superstar. This was a chance for Toney to show that a boxer can transition into MMA and be an effective opponent despite obvious drawbacks that standup only fighters have against a well-rounded mixed martial artist with a clear wrestling advantage such as Couture.
The time is near and fans are filing into the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts for UFC 118. UFC 118 is just days away and even though much of the talk has been about the Randy Couture vs. James Toney fight the entire card is solid. The main card is a lightweight championship rematch between current champ Frankie Edgar against former champ BJ Penn. Along with the Couture vs. Toney fight the main card is rounded out with Demian Maia vs. Mario Miranda, Kenny Florian vs. Gray Maynard and Nate Diaz vs. Marcus Davis.
