Last week was a slow week in MMA due to the holiday of giving thanks for what you’ve got. But just like all the other sports thing never completely shut down during holidays and despite limited events last week there were still some news.

With the UFC and Bellator putting on great cards this weekend, the once proclaimed great heavyweight in the world fought to relatively little fanfare. Headlining the M-1 Global early this morning, Fedor Emelianenko made his first appearance since losing three in a row which resulted in his Strikeforce release.
The return home for Fedor Emelianenko is set for November 20th as “the last emperor” will take on Jeff Monson inside the Olympic Stadium in Moscow, Russian. After nearly 10 years without a defeat, Emelianenko (31-4, 1NC) has lost his last three fights before being shown the door by Strikeforce.
It’s no doubt that Fedor Emelianenko at 31-4 was one of the best heavyweight fighters ever to grace combat sports. Now that he has turned out three depressing loses in a row, many fans have turned their backs on him and demanded him to hang them up. While many fans might disagree, the fight has not left “The Last Emperor” and he will continue to fight.
The main card of Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum card finally marked the completion of the Heavyweight Grand Prix quarterfinal round. After a four month wait the Grand Prix returned with Josh Barnett vs. Brett Rogers and Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum.
When Strikeforce decided to pair the two best heavyweight grapplers outside of the UFC together, the fans were promised a great addition to a stacked card. This weekend one prospect with a perfect record and Olympic gold caliber wrestling will face a tough veteran with great wrestling and Jiu Jitsu accomplishments creating a heavyweight chess match and a chaotic fight.
With Mixed Martial Arts becoming more and more a part of the mainstream, it’s about time they get recognized with their own goofy and potentially completely wrong “Most likely” awards. Each fight will get its own award followed by the reason they deserve that award, so sit back and enjoy.
This Saturday, June 18th, Strikeforce invades the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum (aka Strikeforce: Dallas) features the final two bouts of the Heavyweight Grand Prix Quarterfinals, with the winners moving on to the Semis to face either Antonio Silva or Sergei Kharitonov. After many scheduled bouts had to be taken off the card and fighters shuffled around, the final fight card is set.
