In 1967, Murray Woroner had an idea for a program, where the greatest heavyweight boxers in history would fight each other to the delight of radio audiences. Considering boxing had been around, in various forms of rule-sets and legality, for a hundred years, this was a colossal undertaking. With the aid of 250 boxing experts, sixteen of the greatest pugilists in history were selected and given scores in 128 attributes ranging from punching power, to footwork, to confidence. These numbers were then fed into a state-of-the-art computer, very similar to the Spike TV series The Deadliest Warrior, and each fight was virtually simulated. When the dust settled at the end of several weeks of prime time programming, Rocky Marciano defeated Muhammad Ali to become the Greatest Heavyweight Boxer Ever. The problem was, basically no one, including the boxing experts involved in the project, agreed with this.

Veteran fighter Mike Pyle walked away from Saturday’s TUF 16 Finale as the top earning with a win / show purse totaling $78,000. Pyle closed out the preliminary portion of the card with a TKO finish of James Head just under two minutes into the first round. The impressive win was his third consecutive win, all by way of knockout.

Things have been slow the last few months with regards to change amongst the MMA rankings. Injuries to champions and top fighters along with dominate champions have limited the movement but things are beginning to pick up. In November the UFC saw one of its champions return to action after a long layoff due to injury and the final month of the year will see many highly ranked fighters step into the cage.

Taking on a game challenger in Carlos Condit at UFC 154, GSP showed that not only was he back in fighting form, he was perhaps even better than he left. We saw not only his pure athletic abilities and prowess in different aspects of MMA itself, but the grit of a champion as he went five hard rounds, and bounced back from a near fall in the third round.

The UFC welterweight champion returns to action this weekend as Canada’s Georges St-Pierre looks to unify the belts at UFC 154 in Montreal. Also looking to unify the belt will be the interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit who defeated Nick Diaz way back in February by unanimous decision. St-Pierre has been out since April of last year after injuring his knee late last year that required surgery.
