The fight fans have waiting to see for a year and a half finally happens this weekend at UFC 158. UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre will make his eighth consecutive title defense in the night’s main event against former Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz.
Saturday night in Las Vegas, Colton Smith was crowned The Ultimate Fighter 16 winner with a slow, grinding unanimous decision win over Mike Ricci in the TUF 16 Finale co-main event. Smith dominated the fight with his wrestling to win the six figure contract but the bout pretty much summed up the 16th season of The Ultimate Fighter in just 15 minutes.
Amidst everything else going on, the UFC has themselves a busy day today with the UFC on FX 6 taking place in Australia and The Ultimate Fighter 16 finale weigh-ins. All 24 fighters made weight today for tomorrow’s event that will crown The Ultimate Fighter 16 welterweight winner.
Not only is The Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale taking place this weekend but the second international version of the reality shot, TUF: Smashes will also be holding their finale in Australia. With the time difference the Australian card airs on Friday, while the domestic TUF 16 finale will air live on Saturday from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
In some tricky scheduling, we have two TUF Finales in two days, with TUF: The Smashes and TUF 16: Carwin vs. Nelson. While Carwin vs. Nelson itself will be put on the shelf due to Carwin’s knee injury, we’re still treated to a solid card with Matt Mitrione stepping in on short notice against Nelson. It started with two teams of eight battling for a spot in The Ultimate Fighter 16 finale on December 15 in Las Vegas. As the four remaining fighters have reached the semifinals the tide has changed and the teammates will now face each other for those coveted two spots in the finals.
After Roy nelson threw Mike Ricci under the bus in last week’s episode on The Ultimate Fighter 16, things get started off this week with more fallout. Mike Hill is upset that “his boy” called him out and is now ready to throw down with his fellow Canadian. Ricci on the other hand just wanted to defeat Team Nelson’s number two pick after already knocking off their first pick.
