A solid night of fights all around at tonight’s UFC 164. There was plenty of high quality action in the cage across all weight classes. A belt changed hands, contenders were set on track, and we learned a lot about several fighters, old and new.
Following Wednesday Fight Night 27 event, the UFC makes a quick turnaround for tomorrow’s UFC 164 from Milwaukee, Wisconsin as part of the Harley Davidson Hometown Showdown. Headlining the fight card is the UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson looking to avenge his loss to Anthony Pettis back at WEC 53.
There has been a fair bit of controversy surrounding the UFC 164 main event, but whether or not the matchmaking is suspect, the match itself is sure to be magnificent. Years removed from their last outing, Henderson and Pettis are back to see whose come the farthest since WEC closed their doors, and it’s anyone’s guess who will hold the belt at night’s end.
Amidst everything else going on, the UFC has themselves a busy day today with the UFC on FX 6 taking place in Australia and The Ultimate Fighter 16 finale weigh-ins. All 24 fighters made weight today for tomorrow’s event that will crown The Ultimate Fighter 16 welterweight winner.
Not only is The Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale taking place this weekend but the second international version of the reality shot, TUF: Smashes will also be holding their finale in Australia. With the time difference the Australian card airs on Friday, while the domestic TUF 16 finale will air live on Saturday from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
In some tricky scheduling, we have two TUF Finales in two days, with TUF: The Smashes and TUF 16: Carwin vs. Nelson. While Carwin vs. Nelson itself will be put on the shelf due to Carwin’s knee injury, we’re still treated to a solid card with Matt Mitrione stepping in on short notice against Nelson. Being as us American folks missed out of The Smashes, I’ll be combining these two cards into one epic fight report for your reading pleasure, so let’s dig into the massive report.
The UFC on FOX 3 card started off tonight with two bouts streaming on Facebook before the remaining six preliminary fights aired live on Fuel TV. The third installment of the UFC on FOX will feature a four fight main card, headlined by an important lightweight showdown between Nate Diaz and Jim Miller.
