UFC/WEC Merger Bullet Points

Thursday the UFC announced that on January 1, 2011 the WEC would merge into the UFC. The merger had been talked about for some time and as Dana White said during the press conference “the time is right for this”.

Since the announcement the merger has been broken down, dissected and picked apart. Some have called it great for the sport, while others are worried about the monopoly the UFC now has on MMA.

The merger is big news for MMA, but a lot for the fans to wrap their heads around. What does the merger mean for the fighters and the fans and how does it affect them both is what’s we will attempt to help answer below.

WEC and UFC Lightweight champs to battle it out

If you’ve been living under a rock for the past couple days, or just haven’t heard yet, the UFC and the WEC have merged together and at the start of the New Year the WEC will be under the UFC banner together. This means that now on the UFC roster are Bantamweights and Featherweights, in addition to a new group of Lightweights.

UFC 125: Jose Aldo to Face Josh Grispi

With all the recent changes in the MMA world, the most exciting fighter in the soon to be merged WEC will pave the path for a new Title in the UFC. Jose Aldo (18-1 MMA) looks to defend his 145lb. belt against Josh Grispi (14-1 MMA) at UFC 125.

THE FIGHT CLUB 12: Devastation Announced

Edmonton, Alberta (Canada): Today one of the top fight promotions in Canada, The Fight Club announced “DEVASTATION”. The fight card will take place on Friday, December 10th, live from the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The main event will feature a rematch between Ottawa, Ontario native Craig “Farmer” Brown (7-3) as he takes on Chase Dagenhardt (8-1), who hails from Lethbridge, Alberta, for the vacant TFC Canadian Middleweight Title.

Gabriel Gonzaga: Once on Top Now Needs to Regroup

At one time Gabriel Gonzaga was one of the most feared fighters in the heavyweight division.  With knockout power in both hands, excellent jiu jitsu skills and good size and speed, Gonzaga was destroying his opponents left and right.  The head kick knockout of Mirko Cro Cop by Gonzaga will be seen on highlight reels for the rest of time.  It was this dominance that earned him a shot at championship gold against Randy Couture at UFC 74.  That dominance was nowhere to be seen as Couture had his way with Gonzaga, earning a TKO victory in the third round.
