Matt Hamill vs Phill Davis at UFC 129 is Big for Both Fighters

The Ultimate Fighter season three fighter, Matt “The Hammer” Hamill (10-2 MMA, 9-2 UFC) will meet fast rising star Phil “Mr. Wonderful” Davis (8-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) at UFC 129. According to MMAJunkie.com, sources close to the event say both fighters have verbally agreed to the Light Heavy weight match-up and they are awaiting contracts to sign.

Hamill is coming off of arguably the biggest win in his career, where he dominated Tito Ortiz at UFC 121. The Hammer controlled the bout against Ortiz, winning a unanimous decision. Prior to his victory over Ortiz, Hamill had won a majority decision over Keith Jardine, which would ultimately be Jardine’s final bout in the UFC. Hamill is on a 5 fight win streak, although that streak is debatable because one of those was a win via disqualification. At a bout in December 2009, Hamill was mounted and was on his way to suffering a vicious loss at the hands of Jon Jones. However, Jones dropped a few nasty illegal “12 to 6” downward elbows on the head and nose of Hamill that lead to a disqualification and a victory for Hamill.

Davis enters the cage after submitting Tim Boetsch with a Modified Kimura last November at UFC 123. Mr. Wonderful is undefeated in his young MMA career at 8-0. The former Penn State wrestling superstar has made the transition to MMA with relative ease. Davis is comfortable on the ground and has been working on his Jiu Jitsu game and improving his striking with the legendary Lloyd Irvin and Alliance MMA.

This is a good test for both fighters in the light heavyweight division and a step up in competition for both fighters from their last opponent. A victory over the up and coming Davis should solidify Hamill as a force within the UFC light heavyweight division. On the other hand, a win for Davis would catapult him among the UFC’s 205 pounders. Hamill will be the biggest “name” Davis has fought in his young MMA career and a win over “The Hammer” would definitely be “wonderful” for Davis’ career.
