Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum brings closer to the Grand Prix Quarterfinal Round

The main card of Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum card finally marked the completion of the Heavyweight Grand Prix quarterfinal round. After a four month wait the Grand Prix returned with Josh Barnett vs. Brett Rogers and Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum.

For a look at the night’s undercard, click here. Below are the results from the night

265 lbs.: Chad Griggs vs. Valentijn Overeem – Chad Griggs 1st rd. TKO (2:08)

Early in the fight Griggs throws Overeem down and works his ground and pound. Overeem rolls and gives his back up and Griggs continues the onslaught until the ref stops the fight. It looks like Overeem taps but the fight was rules a technical knockout.

265 lbs.: Daniel Cormier vs. Jeff Monson – Daniel Cormier by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Cormier looked much improved in his striking against the striking impaired Monson. Cormier kept this fight standing the whole time and easily won a unanimous decision. Cormier looked the better fighter and should be ready for a step up in competition, maybe against Griggs?

155 lbs.: Jorge Masvidal vs. K.J. Noons – Jorge Masvidal by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

I very entertaining fight that you might not think would be the case from the one-sided judges’ scores. Masvidal out boxed Noons and landed many knees that changed the complexion of the fight. Noons got cut on the forehead from a knee and wasn’t the same after that. Masvidal impressed and will most likely take on the Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez next.

265 lbs.: Josh Barnett vs. Brett Rogers – Josh Barnett by 2nd round Submission (Side Choke)

Barnett completely dominated Rogers to advance to the semifinals by taking the fight to the game and mounting Rogers at ease. Barnett softened up Rogers in the first round and after mounting Rogers again he slipped in a tight side choke for the win.

265 lbs.: Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum – Alistair Overeem by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 30-27, 30-27)

A very odd fight with both fighters having opposite game plans and only Werdum was willing to get dabble in the others game plan. Werdum landed more strikes but Overeem showed solid takedown defense and finished on top to end rounds one and two.
