Ronda Rousey vs. Miesha Tate could be big for WMMA

It’s kind of unfortunate but WMMA still exhibits the appearance of being handled with “kid gloves” by many of the larger organizations that promote the female in the sport. The combination of lack of female competitors overall in the sport and the simple fact that it hasn’t been totally accepted by the masses is holding the women back. One thing WMMA does have going for them are a handful of “stars” that have shown they can put butts in the seats for their battles inside the cage.

Names such as Gina Carano, Miesha Tate, and Cristiane ‘Cyborg‘ Santos have done what they can to promote the sport and the WMMA movement. They have competed on main card, in title fights and held their own alongside the men. Following Strikeforce Challengers 20, WMMA might have found a new star in the Olympic judoka Ronda Rousey (4-0).

Ronda’s recent, and brutal victory over Julia Budd at Strikeforce Challengers 20 was hard for some to watch as Rousey horribly dislocated Budd’s arm with her fourth consecutive armbar submission finish. The armbar streak has her now being called ‘The Arm Collector‘ in place of her original ‘Rowdy’ nickname by the fans.

Following her destruction of Budd, Rousey called out the current Strikeforce bantamweight champion Miesha Tate, but only after she said that she’d fight Sarah Kaufman first if need be. Tate stormed the MMA world in 2011 by winning the Strikeforce bantamweight title after defeating Marloes Coenen in July. Apparently Tate was not too happy with some of Rousey’s recent comments and the two had themselves a good ole twitter beef.

It was thought that Kaufman would be next in line for Tate but the powers that be might see a fight between Tate and Rousey as the better fight to make at this moment. Their fight could potentially be “the” bout that turns the heads of all of the people who haven’t paid close attention to women’s MMA yet.
