Gabriel Gonzaga Returns to the Octagon at UFC 142

| December 17, 2011 | Reply

With the injury to heavyweight Rob Broughton, UFC veteran Gabriel Gonzaga has been tabbed as the replacement and will return to the Octagon to face fellow Brazilian Edinaldo Oliveira at UFC 142 in Brazil. Gonzaga last fought in the UFC back in 2010 when he lost via unanimous decision to Brendan Schaub at UFC 121.

After being released from the UFC, “Napao” (12-6) retired from mixed martial arts and stated he’d only be competing in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. That retirement lasted just under a year as the Brazilian defeated Parker Porter by 3rd round arm-triangle choke submission at Reality Fighting: Gonzaga vs. Porter.

Gonzaga has fought 12 times in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, holding a record of 7-5 with five (T)KO’s and two submissions. His biggest win came at UFC 70 when he knocked out the legend Mirko Cro Cop with a highlight reel head kick. He would then come up short against Randy Couture for the heavyweight title at UFC 74.

Oliveira (13-0-1, 1nc) will be making his UFC debut in his home country as the UFC makes their second trip Brazil in just under five months. The fans in Rio de Janeiro on January 14th will have two countrymen putting it all on the line as they step into the Octagon at UFC 142.

My brain child is MMAValor, something I had wanted to do for a long time and finally it’s here. Been an MMA fan since TUF season one (play catch up all the time) and the obsession started to grow like a weed and as the sport grows so does the love for the sport. I’m a jack of all trades, a very organized person that rides an emotional roller coaster daily.
