The UFC welcomed Strikeforce heavyweight contender Fabricio Werdum back to the octagon Saturday night at UFC 143: Condit vs. Diaz, as he took on TUF winner, IFL veteran, and MMA fan favorite ‘Big Country’ Roy Nelson. MMA fans were surprised to see just how comfortable Werdum was standing and striking with the rotund brawler. Fabricio threw every attachment in his MMA Swiss army knife of tricks at Nelson, but Roy just took it like a boss, and kept coming back for more.

Werdum’s usage of the Muay Thai plum clinch to deliver knee strikes benefited his cause for a victory, as he was awarded the unanimous decision win over Roy. The battle was good enough to convince the UFC brass to present Werdum and Nelson with the Fight of the Night bonus, which padded their wallets with an extra $65,000.

Fabricio’s victory now brings the recent Strikeforce heavyweight imports to 3-0 in their UFC performances, with Overeem beating Lesnar, Lavar Johnson knocking out Joey Beltran, and now with Werdum defeating Roy Nelson. It was another solid move by Zuffa to bring over the heavy hitters from Strikeforce, and right now, the UFC heavyweight division is more exciting than it’s ever been.
