UFC on FOX 4 Main Card Breakdown

| August 3, 2012 | Reply

Coming up this Saturday, August 4, UFC on Fox 4: Shogun vs. Vera comes to you live from inside The Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. As has been the case with many events lately, this card was struck with the injury bug and fights have had to be rescheduled, rearranged and some even cancelled. With just one day until show time, let’s see how these fights breakdown.

First up on the Main Card features Mike “Quick” Swick (14-4) as he makes his way back into The Octagon after a two and a half-year absence against DaMarques “Darkness” Johnson (16-10) in the Welterweight division. After his loss to Paulo Thiago, Swick battled with illness and injury that forced him to withdraw from several bouts. Upon taking the time to heal up and get healthy, Swick is ready to jump back into the division and make his way back up to the top. However, his path will not be an easy one with Johnson standing in his way. Although he may not be a top contender, Johnson is always a tough competitor that shows up to fight. With both men always down to put on a great show for the fans, this fight should be no different.

Up next, we have a Lightweight bout Joe “J-Lau” Lauzon (21-7) and former WEC Champion Jamie Varner (20-6-1, 2nc). Varner made a great second impression in his UFC return with his first round knockout of Edson Barboza back in May and now he is taking a step up in competition with Lauzon. J-Lau, however, is coming off a brutal KO loss at the hands of another former WEC Champion, Anthony Pettis. Although there are no title implications with this bout, the victor will definitely increase their stock within the division.

UFC 139 Ryan Bader 002 280x200 UFC on FOX 4 Main Card Breakdown

Ryan Bader

The UFC on FOx 4 Co-Main Event of the evening is a battle between former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida (17-3) and TUF 8 winner Ryan “Darth” Bader (14-2). Out of the five losses between both of them, four of them have come by way of stoppage. On the bright side, there is also seventeen stoppage wins between them as well. In a classic battle of Striker vs. Grappler, Bader will need to utilize his strong wrestling abilities to neutralize Machida’s elusiveness. Although Bader’s never been knocked out before, Machida has plenty of power that could end his night at any moment. If either man wants to make it back to the top of the division, a big win here will definitely be a step in the right direction.

The Main Event of the evening is another Light Heavyweight bout between former champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (20-6) and Brandon “The Truth” Vera (12-5, 1nc). It was recently announced by Dana White that the winner of this bout would be next in line to face the winner of the Jones/Henderson fight. This announcement was met with mixed feelings by the media and fans alike and subsequently revised. A potential title shot is still on the line but the co-main event winner now has an opportunity as well. Once the cage doors lock in the UFC on FOX 4 main event and the potential title shot is on the line, fireworks will go off and you’ll get to watch it for free!

The UFC on FOX 4 preliminary card will air live on FX.
