World Combat Series 10Tonight’s World Combat Series 10 event took place after the MMA Evolution EXPO brought several vendors, Martial Arts seminars and a BJJ tournament to the Parkside Hall in San Jose, California. The EXPO started early and continued on throughout the Amateur card that featured 13 exciting fights.

The place was packed as fans walked the EXPO grounds checking out the booths as well as the seminars and tournaments. The BJJ mats were extremely popular as the kids took the mats before the adults and in between a few special attraction match-ups.

When the action died down outside the cage it was time for the fighters to get things going inside the cage. All the amateur fights were three 2 minutes but few of them needed all six minutes.

World Combat Series 10 Results:

185 lbs.: Laim Purvis vs. Stephone Johnson – Liam wins by 1st round TKO

  • Both fighters are making their amateur debut and wasted little time turning the fight into a scrap. They clinched up and Johnson went for a guillotine but eventually ended up being mounted and could not escape.

125 lbs.: Mefi Monterroso vs. Julius Rhedrick – Mefi Monterroso by Unanimous Decision

  • Fairly one-sided fight as Rhedrick was on his back the majority of the fight. Monterroso just looked to be the more polished fighter and Rhedrick’s wild strikes resulted in him being put on his back.

170 lbs.: Hugo Lujan vs. Terrance Howard – Hugo Lujan by 1st round TKO

  • It started out slow and Howard took a kick to the cup to make sure it was working right. Lujan scored a big slam and worked to a position where he could drop the ground and pound to finish the fight seconds before the bell.

205 lbs.: Brandon Sparks vs. Victor Bryson - Brandon Sparks by Split Decision

170 lbs.: Israel Delgado vs. Jason Trapp – Israel Delgado by 1st round TKO

  • Fight started I blinked and it was over……

170 lbs.: Rich O’Toole vs. Gabriel Pena – Rich O’Toole by Split Decision

230 lbs.: Oscar Castro vs. John Mathison – Oscar Castro by Unanimous Decision

  • Castro was the much taller man and used that length to control the fight. Mathison hand the most impressive suplex of the night but it was in a losing effort.

185 lbs.: Juan Diaz vs. Justin Davis – Justin Davis by 1st round KO

  • Davis wasted no time going straight at Diaz and before you knew it was over.

265 lbs.: Carlos Lopez vs. Raymond Gusman – Carlos Lopez by 1st round TKO

  • A tale of two fights; Gusman was getting the better on the feet but Lopez took the fight to the ground and finished things.

135 lbs.: Kevin Danz vs. Elias Alberti – Elias Alberti by 2nd round TKO

  • Really fun back and forth bout that just abruptly ended. Halfway through the second round Danz got clipped and Alberti took over and finished.

135 lbs.Title Fight: Isaiah Batin-Gonzalez vs. Jason Rice – Isaiah Batin-Gonzalez by 1st round Armbar Submission

  • Hopefully Rice will learn that picking your opponent up and slamming him down is not the most effective way to escape an armbar.

125 lbs. Title Fight: Matthew Ramirez vs. Michael Gall – Matthew Ramirez by Split Decision

  • A very close razor-thin fight that came down to half of a point (amateur scoring uses .5) in favor of Ramirez.

155 lbs. Title Fight: JJ Okanovich [C] vs. Luis Vargas – Luis Vargas by Unanimous Decision

  • The challenger nearly finished the fight in the opening round but maybe let the champion back into the fight due to his show boating. The Champion Okanovich seemed to have gained control of the fight in round two and looked to retain his title, but Vargas wasn’t having any of it. Vargas took over and closed out World Combat Series 10 with title changing hands

Been an MMA fan since TUF season one (play catch up all the time) and the obsession started to grow like a weed and as the sport grows so does the love for the sport. I’m a jack of all trades, a very organized person that rides an emotional roller coaster daily.
