Recap of UFC 104 and bonuses
With the crazy ending to the main event at last nights UFC 104 a full recap is going to be passed over in favor of my thoughts on the controversial result in the main event. For all the results from UFC 104 please check them out here. After my crappy 2-4 at Dream 11 I went 7-4 on my picks for UFC 104 and that brings my overall to 42-24.
The main event was an epic battle and really was one of the hardest I have ever seen to judge. The fight went the full 25 minutes and all three judges called it in favor of the champ 48-47. The crowd, Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan were all shocked with the result and the fans let Machida know it. I scored the fight 3 rounds to 2 in favor of shogun, with one of the first three rounds going to shogun and the final 2 also to shogun. The judges all had the first 3 rounds to Machida and the final two rounds for Shogun. I plan to watch the fight over again to see what I might have missed but I really do not have an issue with the result. Both Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan said it best “you have to beat the champ to become the champ” and I agree with that statement. To become the champ you need to beat the champ and not let it go to the judges. Shogun fought an almost flawless fight but he never tried to finish the fight and left it in the judge’s hands and the rest is now history. I guarantee that in their rematch (February??) the fight will not go to the judges.
The bonuses for the night were:
- Submission of the Night: Stefan Struve (triangle over Chase Gormley) – $60,000
- Fight of the Night: Pat Barry vs. Antoni Hardonk (Barry won by TKO in round 2) – $60,000 each
- Knockout of the Night: Pat Barry (Barry won by TKO in round 2) – $60,000
With the epic main event how Barry vs. Hardonk got the fight of the night is really beyond me.
