Fight fans in the Mid-Atlantic Region are very familiar with Lightweight Jeremy Carper. They know him as a hard-working, dedicated, West Virginia fighting machine. The proficiency of Jeremy’s stand up game has garnered him the nickname “Cro-Carp”, a play off the nickname of Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic.
It’s not often that we get to hear true sentiment from athletes. Original thoughts are not always what “the business” wants it’s participants to put out there. How many times have we heard a Shaquille O’Neal interview where all he would rattle off was that he “wanted to play within himself”, he just wanted to “come out and play his game” and just wanted to “help the team”? Most pro athletes keep their heads down chasing that fame and fortune, sometimes to their own detriment.
After a two and a half-year layoff, Justin McCully is back and will be making his second trip back into the cage for Resurrection Fighting Alliance. The drive to compete and to test himself is what drew him back to fighting, after going just 2-2 in the UFC. The recently turned 36-year-old didn’t know what to expect when he got back in that cage, on December 16th, to face Justin Grizzard. What he got was a TKO win, a date to fight Derrick Lewis at RFA 2 and the confidence in knowing that he can still perform at a high level in MMA.
The New Year is coming and this is the time where we often reflect on the events and happenings of the current year. I remember ringing in 2011, and thinking back to November of 2010, where I saw L.C. Davis lose a unanimous decision to Raphael Assuncao at WEC 52. The loss was L.C.’s second in a row, which resulted in his subsequent release from Zuffa, Inc., which had recently announced that World Extreme Cagefighting would merge with the UFC.
It’s that time of year again, Holiday time. Even though it seems like the Christmas season begins right after the kids finish up their Halloween candy, the Holiday season still seems to sneak up on people. With so many people having careers AND families that keep them going a mile a minute, is there any wonder that some people lose track of time?
