Ben Askren comments on Jay Hieron Signing with Bellator
Super free agent Jay Hieron has announced that he has signed to fight for Bellator Fighting Championships. Fighting out of Xtreme Couture camp, he sports a 19-4-0 record, though his biggest fight is likely his loss to Georges St. Pierre way back at UFC 48 in 2004. Also known as “The Thoroughbred”, Heron is a top-level pro, having fought for the UFC, WEC, IFL, Affliction and most recently, Strikeforce. He is riding a 7 fight win streak, capped off by a unanimous decision win over UFC-vet Joe Riggs.
His addition to the Bellator Welterweight Tournament next season makes this perhaps the most prestigious division in the promotion. The tourney already features Dan Hornbuckle and former champ Lyman Good, but the news of Hieron’s signing could benefit current Welterweight Champ Ben Askren the most. Hieron has already beaten Good and Hornbuckle, if he were to make his way through the field, he would obviously be a step up in competition for Askren. If Hieron were to lose, then it would prove that Bellator has a much better field of fighters than many critics have credited them with.
When sought for comment, Askren said, “I am very excited about Bellator signing Jay Hieron because whether he wins the tourney or not he adds so much more legitimacy to it.” Askren continues to prepare himself for the next season of Bellator, working on his striking skills at the Den in Scottsdale, Arizona. He has also been entering national and international grappling competitions to complete his MMA game as he continues to evolve from his record-setting NCAA wrestling career at Missouri.
Hi there,
Didn’t know this Bellator, does anyone can tell me where is he come from?
