Kyle Kingsbury Looks to continue his streak
Kyle Kingsbury will look to build on his current three fight win streak at The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale on Saturday, June 4th. Standing in his way will be Fabio Maldonado, who himself is currently riding an 11 fight win streak.
Kingsbuy was introduced to MMA fans on The Ultimate Fighter season 8. While he lost his way into the house, losing to eventual winner Ryan Bader, two injuries gave him a second chance, joining Team Nogueira and earning high praise from one of the greatest heavyweight champions of all-time, being called the leader of the team. His time during TUF was rough, losing to Krzysztof Soszynski in the first round and losing to fellow teammate Tom Lawlor on the Finale.
A fan favorite and known for the fanny pack “Kingsbu” always carries around with him, injuries sidelined him for almost a year before he returned with a victory over Razak Al-Hassan which started the current win streak. A streak that also includes a win over Jared Hamman, that also won him Fight of the Night honors, and most recently a 21 second TKO victory of submission specialist Ricardo Romero at UFC 126.
Kingsbury currently trains at Power MMA with former cast mate Ryan Bader, CB Dollaway and former college wrestling stand-out Aaron Simpson. The 29 year old has shown the toughness and willingness to bang with his opponents, while showing off impressive clinch work and heavy hands. All while taking the fight where he knows he can win, using solid wrestling to take opponents to the mat when the opportunity presents itself.
Standing in Kingbury’s way will be Fabio Maldonado, who had an impressive UFC debut, taking down James McSweeney at UFC 120 in the 3rd round. A former undefeated pro boxer in his home country of Brazil who saw all but one of 22 victories end in the way of KO or TKO. Fabio has transitioned well into MMA, training with Team Nogeuira and improving his all around skills. 12 of Fabio’s 18 victories have come in the way of KO/TKO and he will look to establish his game plan early.
This fight will depend on Kingsbury’s growth as a fighter, who has shown improvements since his time on the Ultimate Fighter. Whether this fight remains a stand-up brawl or we see Kingsbury’s improved wrestling will remain to be seen. But a win over Fabio could continue to move Kingsbu up the rankings and will surely improve his standings in the Light Heavyweight division.
