Carlos Condit and BJ Penn discuss October Meeting via Twitter

| July 12, 2011 | Reply

Twitter is a very powerful tool, and the social media giant may have led the way to a very interesting Welterweight tilt in October.  Carlos Condit and BJ Penn have agreed to meet each other in October and the UFC seems to be all for putting the fight together.

jonftweet Carlos Condit and BJ Penn discuss October Meeting via Twitter“The people have spoken @bjpenndotcom, they want to see us scrap, let’s give em what they asked for.”  Carlos Condit’s Twitter account proposed the challenge to BJ Penn yesterday and it didn’t take long for BJ to respond with “@CarlosCondit Yup. Let’s do it! October 29th.”

The proposed rematch between BJ Penn and Jon Fitch appears to be a memory at this point, as a fight with Condit and BJ Penn would be seen as an easier fight to promote with Condit being a very hot commodity right now.  Jon Fitch wasn’t a quiet bystander in this Twitter, stating that BJ Penn “Broke his heart” and he “Thought Penn was a man of principal.”  It will be interesting to see how this all plays out over the next few months.

There seems to be a bit of logjam atop the UFC Welterweight division.  Carlos Condit, BJ Penn, Jon Fitch, Josh Koscheck, Nick Diaz, and Jake Shields all want shots at GSP and they will have to begin eliminating each other for that chance.  BJ Penn will either face Carlos Condit or Jon Fitch to determine a possible contender for the winner of GSP and Nick Diaz.

Whether or not Carlos was successful in his Twitter challenge to BJ Penn remains to be seen, but the whole social networking platform can prove to be a very interesting tool for fighters looking for fights.  The UFC asked their fighters at the 2011 Fighter Summit to use Twitter, and yesterday they did.
