Thiago Silva steps in to face Alexander Gustafsson at UFC on Fuel TV 2
Five and a half weeks before the UFC makes its debut in Sweden, the main event has been switched up due to injury. Sweden’s own Alexander Gustafsson was slated to face Antonio Rogerio Nogueira but a knee injury suffered while training has forced “Lil Nog” to withdraw. Replacing the light heavyweight will be the hard-hitting Thiago Silva, who hasn’t fought since January of 2011.
The UFC announced the injury to “Lil Nog” and replacement earlier today on their website.
Silva (14-2, 1nc) defeated Brandon Vera at UFC 125 but the decision was later overturned to a no contest after Silva falsified his pre fight urine samples. Silva was originally schedule to make his return to the Octagon with a rematch against Vera on May 15th but an injury to Vera forced Igor Pokrajac to take his place. Silva will now fight a month earlier then expected but goes from the main card to the main event.
Gustafsson (13-1) has won four in a row and is 5-1 overall in the UFC with three knockouts and two submission. In 14 career bouts Gustafsson has only gone the distance in a fight once and has never seen the third round of a fight. His lone loss came against Phil Davis in his second UFC appearance.
UFC on Fuel TV takes place in Stockholm, Sweden on April 14th.
