A No Fools Guide to the top 5 Fights in April
April will be a month that quiets the spoiled MMA fans who have been whining vicariously through twitter and the forums about not having jam-packed weeks of Mixed Martial Arts goodness. The long absence of Saturday’s without a UFC event will end with two events in the month of April. Between the return of the UFC and the continuation of Bellator’s sixth season there are several top fights to choose from in April.
Brian Stann vs. Alessio Sakara (UFC on Fuel TV 2) – It’s time these guys faced strikers because their last outing against top-tier Middleweight wrestlers lead them both to the pain of a loss on their rise to a shot at glory. This fight should start off fairly slow but once either of these guys A. gets tagged B. starts to bleed or C. pushes forward with strikes, fans will be in for a barn burner. A Slight edge goes to Sakara for his technique with striking but that doesn’t mean much when he is facing a guy with stopping power like Stann.
Rick Hawn vs. Lloyd Woodward (Bellator 66) – Too bad TUF! The majority of real MMA fans should be watching this fight over anything on the planet once these two guys square off. Both are coming off huge wins and both want to dethrone Chandler before he gets too comfortable on top of the mountain. This fight will be full of fireworks with both fighters throwing serious leather and giving it everything they’ve got in this semifinal bout. Seriously who knows who will win, just watch the damn fight it’s going to be a war of all wars.
Rashad Evans vs. Jon Jones (UFC 145) – Boundaries have been crossed and the friends will finally square off in what is promised to be an epic battle. Fight finishers will make this a close fight no matter what the odds makers say it’s going to be a war and a very winnable fight for both guys. Rashad has KO power in his hands and is extremely good at closing the distance as he has proven against Liddell, Griffin, Davis, and Rampage Jackson. Jones has incredible reach and Greco wrestling and if Rashad gets on his back he may easily look like a fish out of water… or even better a smashed tuna. This will be a great fight and may shock many fans on the approach both fighters take to try to win.
Miguel Torres vs. Michael McDonald (UFC 145) – How in the hell is this fight free? Great marketing move to get those last second viewers to choke up and buy the main event. This will be two heavy-handed jiu jitsu aces squaring off and should be three rounds of what the hell just happened? This “styles make fights” dream matchup will practically force Torres into his old scrappy ways and honestly could easily be the best fight of this whole year. Free on FX is too good to be true, so be sure to not miss this fight.
Dennis Siver vs. Diego Nunes (UFC on Fuel TV 2) – How many spinning kicks and flying knees are possible in one fight? This fight will highlight some of Holland’s best Muay Thai vs. Brazil’s best striking and Jiu Jitsu camp. A war of the nations will unfold as two extremely tough fighters will throw caution to the wind in a matchup only the fans can win in. There will be blood! And that’s an understatement to the gore this fight could produce.
Few more fights to watch in April: Alexander Gustafsson vs. Thiago Silva (UFC on Fuel TV 2), Zach Makovsky vs. Eduardo Dantas (Bellator 65), Eddie Alvarez vs. Shinya Aoki (Bellator 66)
These are some tough match ups for each side. No Aprils Fools indeed.
