Rashad Evans vs. Dan Henderson Possible According to UFC President
Last night’s episode of UFC Tonight was filled with breaking news and busted rumors. Amongst the news of Aldo v Pettis actually happening and Demetrious Johnson being injured was a response from UFC President Dana White regarding the former light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans.
When asked about Evans calling out another former champion in Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, White stated that fight was not going to happen. Instead White proposed another intriguing matchup for Evans with Dan Henderson, who is coming off a split decision loss to Lyoto Machida at this past weekend’s UFC 157.
Evans (17-3-1) has lost his last two, including a title fight against Jon Jones and most recently to Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. Evans had been out 11 months prior his UFC 156 bout against Nogueira but his performance was very lackluster and brought criticism from White. The call out of Shogun Rua from Evans though didn’t seem like a farfetched idea considering the recent outcomes from both fighters. White though seems to have other plans for Rua and thinks Henderson is the better matchup to make with Evans.
Henderson (29-9) had his four fight winning streak snapped by Machida, who frustrated the heavy-handed striker all night with his counter strikes. Henderson was supposed to fight Jon Jones at UFC 151 and would have likely fought for the title if he had defeated Machida. Henderson has done seemingly everything in the sport except win UFC gold and at age 42, time is quickly running out. A win over Evans coming off two losses will not earn Henderson a title shot but would be a big win.
It might not be the matchup Evans wants but Henderson does hold a win over Rua so if you do a little MMA Math in your head, the fight with Henderson is actually a better fight. What do you think of a future UFC fight card having Rashad Evans verses Dan Henderson?
