Access Denied: Alistair Overeem Denied License to Fight

The soap opera that has been “Alistair Overeem” had its climatic cliffhanger ending today in Nevada as the UFC heavyweight went before the Nevada State Athletic Commission. The results of the drug test taken after a pre fight press conference for UFC 146 showed Alistair Overeem had an elevated Testosterone ratio of 14:1, which is well over the 6:1 ratio allowed by the NSAC.

On the heels of Frank Mir being announced as the new opponent for Junior Dos Santos at UFC 146, the man originally scheduled to face JDS, Alistair Overeem has finally spoken. The former Strikeforce and Dream Heavyweight champion issued a statement early this morning through Authentic Sports Management.

At last week’s pre-fight press conference for UFC 146, six of the event’s participants were selected for random drug screens. Today the NSAC revealed that all but the number one UFC heavyweight contender Alistair Overeem had passed their pre-fight test. Overeem’s T/E ratio (Testosterone to Epitestosterone) was 10-to-1, which is far over the 6-to-1 limit the NSAC allows for maintaining/obtaining a license, and it now appears as though he will not be competing for the UFC heavyweight title on May 26th at UFC 146.

As we are still yet to see what disciplinary action that the Nevada State Athletic Commission will hand down to Nick Diaz following his failed drug test, UFC president Dana White issued a short public statement today in reference to the matter. Diaz’s drug test for UFC 143 yielded positive results for marijuana, and Dana seems none-too-pleased with the news, issuing the following statement to the media today.

Nearly 70% (15 of 22) of the fighters on the UFC 143: Diaz vs. Condit card was issued medical suspensions today by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Of the 15 fighters to be suspended, seven of those could be out of action for up to six months. One of the seven fighters that avoided suspension was Nick Diaz who lost in the main event to Carlos Condit by Unanimous Decision.

Lorenz Larkin Reacts to King Mo Lawal testing Positive for PED

Yet another Strikeforce fighter tested positive for a performance enhancing drug in back to back events. The Nevada State Athletic Commission announced that former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal failed his drug test for his January 7th fight with Lorenz Larkin.

Saturday’s UFC 137 from Las Vegas, Nevada is now two days old and today the Nevada State Athletic Commission issued its medical suspensions to 10 fighters. While most were minor or for precautionary reasons, undercard fighters Brandon Vera and Bart Palaszewski could be out for up to six months.
