Did The Trash Talking lead to the Downfall of Sean McCorkle?

UFC 124 in Montreal last night delivered a stellar card including the grudge match between Sean McCorkle (9-1) and Stefan Struve (21-4). Fueled by trash talking from McCorkle, that hyped the fight and ultimately pushed it to the night’s co-main event.

Sean McCorkle made his UFC debut at UFC 119, finishing Mark Hunt in the first round via submission. Stefan Struve however, has been on the rise in the heavyweight division going 4-2 in his first six UFC fights.

Sean McCorkle started trash talking via Twitter, and Struve took the high road by saying he would take no part in it. However, after a while he fell into the hype and said a few things himself. Struve admits that it got a little bit personal, but said he was going to take care of McCorkle come Saturday night.

Last night McCorkle started out very well, he covered the distance and managed to get a huge takedown. He then worked hard for a kimura, but Struve is no slouch on his back and stayed while defending the submission. McCorkle’s dominant position was short-lived though, as Struve swept McCorkle and immediately got mount and pounded him out to a TKO win.

McCorkle said on Twitter after the fight that the pressure got to him and he choked, feeling like he couldn’t breathe the minute the fight started. It seems ironic that McCorkle’s trash talk was ultimately his downfall. He hyped the fight tremendously, but in the end, 23,000+ screaming French-Canadians and his determination to live up to his trash talk gave the young stud in the heavyweight division (Stefan Struve) another win under his belt.
