Zoila Gurgel to face Carina Damm at Bellator 57
Fans of WMMA have reason to rejoice now that the match-up between Zoila Gurgel and Carina Damm has been confirmed for Bellator 57. WMMA is still scrapping for legitimacy in the grand scheme of the MMA industry and the continued announcements of premium fights that showcase the incredible female athletes in the sport will only further support their cause.
Gurgel is the current Bellator Women’s champion in the 115 lb. division, is ranked number six in the overall WMMA rankings, and is also ranked in top two positions for both the 115 lb. as well as the 125 lb. weight classes. Zoila is married to MMA veteran, Strikeforce competitor, and Jiu-Jitsu ace Jorge Gurgel and Zoila herself has also competed for the Strikeforce organization with a 1-1 split in her two Strikeforce appearances.
Carina Damm is most definitely the more experienced of the two female combatants, holds a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and has in the past fought under the Strikeforce, Shark Fights, and BodogFight banners. With a total of twenty-three fights on her professional MMA record, Damm also has an almost equal amount of KO and submission victories in her seventeen wins with five knockouts and six submissions respectively. Carina could have had an opportunity to capture her first WMMA title if it were indeed a title fight and Bellator would be a great organization to achieve such a goal. WMMA still needs a Griffin/Bonnar type of fight to capture the attention of all MMA fans and not just the “hardcore” type that have already wholeheartedly accepted WMMA as a legitimate part of the sport. Gurgel vs. Damm at Bellator 57 should be great!
