Henderson vs. Guida Provides the Lightweight Division a much needed shot in the Arm
With all of the drama surrounding Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard’s epic trilogy finally reaching its conclusion, the Lightweight division in the UFC is finally moving forward. The UFC Lightweight division is in need of a serious shot in the arm after being stagnant for such a long period of time, thankfully there is Clay Guida vs. Ben Henderson, which takes place as part of the UFC debut event on the FOX.
While we waited for the Edgar/Maynard rematch there were plenty of names that came up as to who would be next in line for a shot at the Lightweight title regardless of who won.
Anthony Pettis was the WEC Lightweight title holder when the UFC absorbed the WEC into the UFC and was first in line for title consideration. When he decided to fight instead of waiting he debuted at the Ultimate Fighter 13 finale where he was defeated by Clay Guida. Then there was Jim Miller who Dana White put his public guns behind as the number one competitor to challenge Frankie or Gray until he squared off against Ben Henderson who was dying to get his hands on Miller after his not so welcoming comments about WEC fighters entering the octagon.
It totally makes sense for Guida and Henderson to fight each other and both have made strong cases for themselves as the frontrunners in the race for the next UFC Lightweight title contender slot. If Miller and Pettis was the top of the food chain, then it is only logical that the two guys that handed them their losses should be at the top of the list. Both Clay and Ben are phenomenal wrestlers and also share a penchant for standing and trading strikes. It should be an awesome fight and one to give us a great idea as to where the division will be heading in the near future.
UFC on Fox takes place on November 12th from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California and will feature a main event between UFC Heavyweight championship Cain Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos.
