Former UFC light heavyweight champion and the original winner of The Ultimate Fighter Forrest Griffin has an opponent for UFC 155. The now UFC veteran will face the former Division I National Champion wrestler Phil Davis in the UFC 155 co-main event.
Originally Griffin was supposed to welcome middleweight title contender Chael Sonnen back to the 205 pound division; that was until he was tabbed to coach opposite Jon Jones on The Ultimate Fighter 17. It was then rumored that Stephan Bonnar would face Griffin for the third time that would’ve essentially bought their UFC careers full circle. In the end though its Davis fighting Forrest Griffin on December 29th inside the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, Nevada.
It’s hard to believe that Forrest Griffin (19-7) has been fighting in the UFC for over eight years but he and Stephan Bonnar had their epic battle at The Ultimate Fighter 1 Finale on April 9th, 2005. Griffin has gone 10-5 during his UFC career and is coming off a unanimous decision win at UFC 148 in the rubber match with Tito Ortiz.
Phil Davis (10-1, 1nc) is coming off a slick submission victory over Wagner Prado at UFC 153 after the two fought to a no contest back in August. Davis was on the doorstep of a title shot at the beginning of the year before suffering his first career loss to Rashad Evans in a light heavyweight title elimination bout.
Now 33 years-old, Forest Griffin has won three of his last four and a win over Davis would position him for possibly one final run at the title. For the younger Davis, a win over a former champ would quickly reposition him near the top of the division.
UFC 155 will close out the year for the UFC with a heavyweight title fight main event between Junior Dos Santos and Cain Velasquez. Tickets for UFC 155 go on sale this Friday October 26th to the general public and earlier for UFC Fight Club and Newsletter subscribers.
