Fighters to “Watch” in Tonight’s MMA Action
With MMA promotions like Bellator and the Maximum Fighting Championship occupying Friday night’s, the end of the work week has become the start of the “Fight Weekend” for fans. This weekend is without a UFC event but tonight’s action at Bellator 78 and MFC 35 are sure to kick off your weekend the right way.
Bellator is in the middle of their seventh season and final one before their move over to Spike TV, while MFC 35 will be the final event of the year for the Canadian promotion. The Bellator 78 undercard will stream on Spike.com while the main card will air live on MTV2 starting at 8pm ET / 5pm PT. The MFC 35 card will be televised on ASX TV starting right after Bellator at 10 pm ET / 7pm PT.
Both cards a solid but there are a few fighters on the two cards that stand out. The fighters listed below are the ones that you shouldn’t be getting up from your seat during to get yourself a beer though.
Lyman Good and Michail Tsarev (Bellator 78) – The marquee matchup of the night features two welterweights looking to secure a spot in the Bellator tournament finals. Good is the former champion looking to get his belt back, while the Russian submission machine Tsarev looks to build off his impressive performance in the tournament’s opening round.
Joseph Henle (MFC 35) – Ultimate Fighter alum Joseph Henle headlines the Maximum Fighting Championship card against Elvis Mutapcic for the promotions vacant middleweight title. The undefeated Henle never got a fight on the Ultimate Fighter finale but has five wins since and will be looking to capture he first championship.
Zoila Gurgel (Bellator 78) – While she is not listed as part of the night main card, Bellator 115 lbs. champion Gurgel will be stepping back into the Bellator cage for the first time in over 19 months. Gurgel brings a six fight winning streak to the non-title 125 lbs. against the relatively unknown Casey Noland.
Brian Rogers (Bellator 78) – The always entertaining Rogers will be looking to get back in the win column when he takes on Dominique Steele. All nine of Rogers wins have been stoppages and most of those were in the first round.
Daniel Straus (Bellator 78) – Despite having already won a title shot by way of winning the season six featherweight tournament, Straus is fighting the veteran Alvin Robinson to stay busy. His relentless style has brought him a 5-1 record with Bellator and will eventually face the winner of Pat Curran and Patricio Freire.
Shane Nelson (MFC 35) – After appearing on the eighth season of The Ultimate Fighter, Nelson went 2-2 in the octagon before getting released. He’s gone 3-1 since that time and will be making his featherweight debut tonight against Graham Spencer.
