Bellator 87 Give the Lightweight Tournament its Undivided Attention

With no title fights on the card, Thursday’s Bellator 87 main card will showcase the opening round of the promotions lightweight tournament. Bellator’s first two events if season eight featured three title fights that forcing portions of the light heavyweight and featherweight opening round tournament bouts to be televised on the preliminary card. Not this card though, all four lightweight bouts will be featured on the Bellator 87 main card on Spike from inside the Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan.

Lightweights heading in different directions following Bellator 76

Besides the quarterfinal round of the season seven featherweight tournament, Friday’s Bellator 76 saw two fighters’ lightweights heading in opposite directions. The main event bout between former Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez and Patricky Freire was fun while it lasted, but once over, left one fighter in the worst slump of his career and the other in a powerful position.

What a mess the season five heavyweight tournament has turned out to be. It all started with eight heavyweights with Eric Prindle and Thiago Santos emerging as the finalists. With a shot at the heavyweight crown, the two fought at Bellator 59 on November 26th, effectively ruining the tournament.

Season five Ends on a Sour Note with Bellator 59
