Another night and another title on the line as the UFC rolls into Fight City USA with an outstanding UFC 160 fight card. Our main event is a rematch you wouldn’t expect, yet one that is hard to argue against, as Cain Velasquez faces Antonio Silva for the second time. Silva was destroyed in their last fight, but a win over Travis Browne and Alistair Overeem paved his way to another chance at a win over Velasquez. The gold at the end of the rainbow just sweetens the pot.
Last night’s UFC on FX was supposed to be the coming out party for the last two Strikeforce middleweight champions. Luke Rockhold and Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza were making their long-awaited UFC debuts in the top two fights on the card. What transpired though were outcomes at the opposite ends of the spectrum, leaving one fighter overjoyed and the other extremely disappointed.
The UFC made its second trip to Brazil this year for tonight’s 13 bout UFC on FX 8 fight card. Headlined by an important middleweight bout featuring Vitor Belfort, who also in the main event of Brazilian card back in January.
The main scale for today’s UFC on FX 8 weigh-ins must have been slightly off from the one backstage because several of the fighters needed the towel in order to make weight. Factor in the handful of fighters that took an inordinately long time to get on the scale and today’s festivities seemed to go on forever.
It’s been a couple of weeks since the UFC Octagon has seen any action but that’s soon to change as the promotion returns to Brazil this weekend for the UFC on FX 8: Belfort vs. Rockhold. Like previous cards held in Brazil, UFC on FX 8 is filled with Brazilian fighters from top to bottom.
Fighters have thin skin these days. Say someone hits like a girl, or that they make funny noises during a match, or that they’re legally cheating with TRT, and all of a sudden everyone has hurt feelings. Back in the day, this was just your standard banter before the fight, and for good reason: Everyone was scared shitless. The UFC is returning to Boston on August 17th and according to reports, Joe Lauzon will be getting his wish to fight in his hometown. The Boston Native fought on the UFC 118 fight card in Boston back in 2010 and now the lightweight has been added to the debut card on the new FOX channel, FOX Sports 1.
